6 Ways To Diversify Your Income as a Personal Trainer

When most people think of earning money as a personal trainer, they assume it’s all about selling one-on-one training sessions. But there are so many opportunities beyond this that can boost your revenue and diversify your income.

Here are 6 ways to diversify your income as a personal trainer.

SELL ONLINE COURSES

In this busy world, people are increasingly wanting to train on their own schedule. So why not offer an online fitness course that allows your clients to train at any time they’d like?

This allows you to “make money while you sleep” - in other words, you won’t have to do a lot of active work to continue selling it. Once the course is created, you will only need to put work into marketing and selling it, and you can spend the rest of your time focusing on other streams of income.

Skillshare, Kajabi and Teachable are all great platforms with plenty of guidance on how to get started with online courses.

OFFER VIRTUAL COACHING

Speaking of the online world, another great option is to provide virtual coaching sessions that allow your clients to train from the comfort of their own home.

The advantage of offering virtual coaching is that your potential clients aren’t limited by location. You can coach anyone, no matter where in the world they are located.

You can use digital apps and platforms like Zoom, Skype and Google Meet to offer online classes.

ORGANISE FITNESS RETREATS/HOLIDAYS

Organising fitness retreats and holidays for your clients is a great way to earn more income. It also develops a sense of community, which can increase customer loyalty and repeat business.

To ensure you actually make money from a fitness retreat, you’ll need to work out how much you should charge your clients. Start by listing out all of the anticipated expenses of the event, such as accommodation, food and equipment (be sure to arrange for group rates!). You’ll then need to calculate how many clients you need to break even. You should also take into consideration any time you’ll need to take away from work. Once you have worked this out, you’ll want to markup the price you will charge, which will be your profit.

OFFER GROUP TRAINING

Group training is a great model as it allows you to serve multiple people at once, increasing your availability.  Clients often seek out this option because they enjoy socialising and it builds a sense of community. This will help to increase your customer loyalty.

Group training can be carried out in person or online using a digital app such as Zoom, Skype or Google Meet. Just keep in mind that even for group training, you need to make an effort to make a personal connection with each person in the class. For this reason, you should put a limit on the number of people that can enrol per class.

SELL DIGITAL PRODUCTS

Another great income stream for personal trainers is to sell a digital product, such as an eBook. You can provide your target audience with all of your knowledge and know-how, by creating an eBook that details your unique methodology or tools and tips. Another option is to create a downloadable workout plan that will help your clients achieve a certain goal.

The key is to know exactly who your target audience is and what they need and provide a digital product that helps them with that need.

EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Think of expanding your knowledge and qualifications so you can offer more services to your clients. For example, studying a nutritional course and getting a qualification under your belt can then allow you to offer one-on-one nutrition coaching, meal plans, group nutrition workshops, pantry clean-ups, and supermarket tours.
